History of smOdyssey
smOdyssey emerged
in 1998 from an active but fragmented San Francisco Bay Area BDSM
scene. The four founders - Blackheart, CeCe, Jerome and Morgan -
conceived an informal organization to hold parties and classes for
fellow kinksters. Community education and involvement eventually
became important parts of the early agenda as well. Many social
events and workshops were held; the first FolsomFringe
in 2000. During this time period, one of the founders (Jerome) also
forged the first connections to local law enforcement agencies.
In early 2003, the founders passed the torch to a provisional board,
which created the formal not-for-profit membership organization,
smOdyssey, Inc. A Board of Directors was elected in late 2003, and
the first members were admitted early the next year.
Today, smOdyssey continues to produce classes, munches, workshops,
discussion groups, parties, and national events through the hard
work of our wonderful volunteers, Team Odyssey. The organization
also builds links to other kink organizations throughout the United
States.
FolsomFringe, smOdyssey's signature event, is held annually on
Folsom Street Fair weekend. It has provided thousands of leather
the opportunity for an intense, enjoyable and educational leather
experience.
smOdyssey is a Coalition Partner of the National Coalition for
Sexual Freedom (NCSF) and has active reciprocal agreements with
other leather organizations.
smOdyssey Objectives
smOdyssey, Inc. is a nonprofit, pansexual membership organization
created to foster social contact, education and community among
adults who are interested in consensual Leather and BDSM topics
and practices. Our goals are:
Leather Panel Contents
The block 'O' has been the primary icon for smOdyssey
since 2000. Blackheart, one of the founders of smOdyssey, created
the design.
The chain and bandanas use hardware from an active
piece of smOdyssey dungeon equipment. The bandanas are arranged
in the colors of the leather flag. Together, they symbolize our
connection to the greater leather community across time and geography,
and are frequently used in outreach activities.
Event pins are from each FolsomFringe, smOdyssey's
signature event.
The NCSF pin is included in recognition of our
membership - as a Coalition Partner - in the National Coalition
for Sexual Freedom, as well as our long standing and personnel support
of this important organization.
